LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapy in Mill Creek & Across Washington
You should not have to spend the first several sessions of therapy figuring out whether it is safe to be yourself.
Northwest Mental Health Alliance provides LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy in Mill Creek, Washington, with telehealth available throughout Washington State.
Our therapists work with queer, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, nonbinary, questioning, asexual, and other LGBTQIA+ clients seeking support for trauma, anxiety, relationships, identity, neurodivergence, grief, family concerns, life transitions, and the regular complicated business of being human.
Sometimes being LGBTQIA+ is central to why someone comes to therapy.
Sometimes it has almost nothing to do with it.
Both are completely valid.
Therapy Where You Don't Have to Translate Yourself First
Finding a therapist can be hard enough.
Finding one while wondering whether you will have to explain your identity, defend your relationship, teach basic terminology, or determine whether your therapist is actually affirming is another layer entirely.
At NWMHA, LGBTQIA+ affirming care means we approach your identity as part of the context of your life—not as something inherently wrong with you or something that needs to be corrected.
Your therapist will focus on the goals that brought you to therapy.
That might include:
Anxiety, panic, or chronic stress
Depression or feeling disconnected
Trauma or complex trauma
Family relationships and boundaries
Coming out—or deciding whether you want to
Gender exploration
Relationships, dating, and intimacy
Religious trauma or spiritual deconstruction
Shame and self-worth
Grief and loss
Neurodivergence, ADHD, or autism
School or workplace stress
Life transitions
Feeling isolated or misunderstood
Experiences of discrimination or rejection
Or something that has absolutely nothing to do with being LGBTQIA+
You don't have to arrive knowing exactly what you want to work on.
"Something isn't working anymore" is enough of a place to begin.
LGBTQIA+ Identity Isn't a Diagnosis
Being queer, trans, bisexual, nonbinary, gay, lesbian, asexual, or questioning is not a mental health disorder.
At the same time, LGBTQIA+ people can experience stress related to rejection, discrimination, family dynamics, religious environments, safety, belonging, and navigating systems that were not necessarily built with them in mind.
Therapy can provide a place to sort through those experiences without assuming your identity itself is the problem.
And sometimes you simply want help with your anxiety, your mother, your relationship, your job, or the fact that your nervous system apparently did not receive the memo that the emergency ended three years ago.
We can work with that too.
Trauma Therapy and EMDR
NWMHA has a strong focus on trauma treatment and EMDR therapy.
For some LGBTQIA+ clients, trauma may involve experiences such as rejection, bullying, family conflict, religious trauma, discrimination, abusive relationships, sexual trauma, medical experiences, or other events that continue to affect the present.
EMDR is a structured trauma therapy designed to help the brain process experiences that continue to feel unresolved.
Not everyone needs EMDR, and not every difficult experience needs to become a trauma-processing project.
Our clinicians can help determine what approach makes sense for you.
Queer, Trans and Neurodivergent?
There is a lot of overlap between the LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent communities.
Some of our therapists are particularly interested in working with people navigating more than one identity or experience at the same time…including LGBTQIA+ clients who are autistic, ADHD, questioning whether they may be neurodivergent, or simply tired of trying to make themselves fit expectations that never made much sense in the first place.
You do not need to separate yourself into neat categories before coming to therapy.
Affordable LGBTQIA+ Therapy Starting at $35
Cost is one of the biggest barriers to consistent therapy.
As a nonprofit behavioral health organization and graduate training site, Northwest Mental Health Alliance offers therapy with supervised graduate therapists on a sliding scale starting at $35 per session.
No insurance is required for these sessions.
Our graduate therapists provide therapy directly to clients while receiving ongoing clinical supervision, consultation, and training.
For many people, this provides access to consistent LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy without a $150–$200 weekly price tag.
Meet Our LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapists
Our team includes therapists with different personalities, approaches, lived experiences, and clinical interests.
While all of our therapists are affirming, some of our graduate therapists have a particular interest in working with LGBTQIA+ clients.
